C.V. Miguel Martinez Schrijver

Born in Groningen 20-02-1968.
Miguel Martinez studied alto saxophone at the Amsterdam Sweelinck Conservatorium with Tim Armacost and Jim Hartog. In 1992 he graduated with the highest possible marks. He won prices with various bands. Among them:

Swingin’ Groningen (with his own quartet)
14th Europ’jazz Contest (Belgium) with “Meeting Point”
Trossesjun Big Band Festival with “Big Band Bos”
International Jazz Contest Getxo (Bilbao, 1994) with “Martinez Move”
Heineken Crosover Award with “The Cool Collective Big Band” 2001

In ’95 he studied during a half year in New York were he took lessons from among others: Kenny Garrett, Lee Konitz, Jackie McLean, Donald Harrison and Dick Oatss.

He played in leading bands from The Netherlands: Martinez Move, New Cool Collective Bigband, Major League, Scetch, Barnicle Bill Trio with the legendary drummer John Engels, Los Hermanos Martinez, The Bigband Of The Concertgebouw, Rumbata Bigband, Miguel Martinez Trio.

With his own group Martinez Move he developed himself as a leader and released five CD’s, among them: “Highway Picnick”, “Hybrid Offspring”, “4:51 AM”.

For many years Martinez Move toured through The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. They played on festivals like “North Sea Jazz” and “North Sea Jazz in South Africa”.

“Los Hermanos Martinez”, (2006-2010). Together with his brother Juan Martinez, he formed a group with Jeroen Vierdag, John Engels and Rob van Bavel. They played a combination of Jazz and Flamenco music and toured through the Netherlands and Bulgaria.

In 2009 he started a new group: “Barnicle Bill Trio” with Mark Haanstra on the acoustic bassguitar and the legendary John Engels on drums. This group presented their first CD in 2010 and was touring through Holland the same year and the year after. In 2012 the group was touring through Asia. From this tour there was recorded a live CD, “No Black Tie”, released in 2013. It was a great succes and there followed a clubtour and gigs on festivals through the Netherlands.

He just formed a new group, “Los Hermanos martinez Y Morelo”, a trio with the famous Eric Vaarzon Morel on Spanish guitar, and his brother Juan Martinez on the bariton saxophone. They play a fusion of Jazz and Flamenco music.

Miguel is a teacher at the Jazz department of the Prince Clause Conservatorium in Groningen. Together with among others Don Braden, David Berkman and Joris Teepe.
